  • 4 slices whole grain or sourdough bread
  • 1 tablespoon butter (softened or melted)
  • 4 ounces smoked Gouda cheese (sliced or shredded)
  • 1 apple (Honeycrisp or Granny Smith, thinly sliced)
  • 1 tablespoon honey (optional)

Instructions

  1. Slice the apple thinly using a sharp knife or mandoline. Grate or slice the Gouda for even melting.
  2. Spread butter evenly on one side of each slice of bread. Place one slice buttered side down on a cutting board.
  3. Add half the cheese on top, layer with apple slices, then add the remaining cheese. Top with another slice of bread, buttered side up.
  4. Heat a skillet over medium-low heat and add the sandwich. Cover loosely and toast for 3–4 minutes per side until golden brown and cheese is melted.
  5. Let sit for 1 minute before slicing and drizzle with honey if desired.
