  • 2 cups brown sugar (packed)
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) butter
  • 1 cup corn syrup
  • 1 can sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 12 Granny Smith apples
  • 7-inch apple sticks
  • 1 pound semisweet chocolate chips (for optional dipping)
  • Various toppings (chopped nuts, sprinkles, etc.)

Instructions

  1. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a medium saucepan over medium heat, combine brown sugar, butter, corn syrup, and sweetened condensed milk. Stir continuously until boiling.
  3. Attach a candy thermometer and cook until it reaches 245°F (firm ball stage). Then remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract.
  4. Wash and dry the Granny Smith apples thoroughly. Insert wooden sticks into the tops.
  5. Dip each apple into the warm caramel mixture until evenly coated. Allow excess caramel to drip off before placing on the prepared baking sheet.
  6. While the caramel is still warm, add your choice of toppings.
  7. Let the caramel apples cool completely at room temperature before serving.
