  • 1 box vanilla cake mix
  • 1 cup full-fat sour cream
  • ½ cup whole milk
  • ⅓ cup butter (melted)
  • 2 large eggs (room temperature)
  • blue food coloring
  • red food coloring
  • 1 cup butter (room temperature)
  • 1 cup vegetable shortening
  • 2 lbs confectioners' sugar
  • tbsps water
  • tsps vanilla extract
  • 1 tbsp red, white and blue sprinkles (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13-inch pan.
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine cake mix, sour cream, milk, melted butter, and eggs; beat for 4 minutes until smooth.
  3. Pour batter into the pan; swirl in red and blue food coloring.
  4. Bake for 25–28 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean. Cool completely before frosting.
  5. For frosting, beat butter and shortening until fluffy; gradually add sugar, then water and vanilla; beat until smooth.
  6. Color frosting with red and blue food coloring. Pipe decorations on cooled cake.
